Twitter to launch Geo-Targeting Advertisement by this Year

Sammy is in Albine road and searching Twitter on her mobile for a McDonald outlet nearby for lunch. She got her result after doing an organic search. She was thinking if she would have got it immediately!!!

Sammy has to wait not much because Twitter is planning to let brands show promoted tweets to customers in their applications within the immediate vicinity of their stores and could be ready as soon as the fourth quarter. This is called geo-targeted marketing.

Even as geo-targeting across other advertising medium such as TV, print, or online may be nothing new, geo-targeting on mobile goes one step further by enabling advertisers to target consumers on the move,  based on their propinquity to a particular store or service provider at the exact moment that the ad is shown.

Ad Age quotes two sources familiar with the matter who say that Twitter is developing a hyper-specific geo-targeting ad product that will let retailers catch customer’s attention when they are in the neighbourhood of their stores.

This type of real-time advertisement could be very helpful for customers as they are alerted with new deals, promotions, offers available at the nearby stores through tweets. Retailers could target specific audiences with their advertisement.

Twitter currently has the option for advertisers to have city based ads and does not pop to the vicinity of the stores, like Facebook has been doing since 2011. Today, Facebook has become the main source of social advertising for small business.  Twitter has not been a meaningful advertising option which will change soon. But this geo-fencing would only be a promoted tweet for Sammy or a useful feature of Twitter….that will be answered soon!!
